The Minority Co’s Indigenous Fashion: Bridging Cultures, Empowering Communities

Indya Hayes, a Wotjobaluk woman, founded The Minority Co, a statement embroidery clothing company, in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. Inspired by the protests and conversations surrounding police brutality and the legacy of colonialism in Australia, Hayes began sewing slogans like “I can’t breathe” onto hoodies. The brand quickly gained popularity, with over 14,000 followers on Instagram and celebrities like Adam Briggs and Jason Momoa wearing her clothes. Despite her success, Hayes remains focused on changing minds and spreading awareness. Running a small business from regional Australia presents challenges in terms of funding, marketing, and time, but Hayes has found support from the Ballarat business community. She was awarded the Youth Innovators Award by the Ballarat council in 2022. Regional communities understand the importance of supporting small businesses, as they contribute positively to the community and promote self-determination for Indigenous entrepreneurs.
