Snapchat’s Snap AI Chatbot Raises Concerns Over Children’s Privacy, Sparking Fresh Debate

Snapchat’s AI chatbot, My AI, has been accused by the UK’s data watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), of posing potential privacy risks to users, especially children. The ICO has warned that it may close down the feature after a preliminary investigation. My AI is powered by ChatGPT, an AI tool that mimics human conversation. The ICO is particularly concerned about the privacy risks for 13- to 17-year-old users, as Snapchat has 21 million users in the UK, many of whom are children. Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, said it would work with the ICO and had conducted a privacy review before launching the feature. The ICO’s findings are not final, and no data protection laws have been breached. If a final enforcement notice is issued, Snap may need to conduct an adequate risk assessment before offering My AI to UK users.
