Rotherham’s Public Realm Scheme Faces Delays: Exclusive Insight on Contractor Troubles

Rotherham Council has faced challenges in finding a private sector contractor for the delayed Riverside Gardens public realm scheme. After a failed procurement exercise, the council has now combined the project with other public realm improvements in the area to make it more appealing to the market. They are preparing to award a contract to CR Reynolds for the first stage of a two-stage design and build contract. However, due to the delays, it is unlikely that the work will be completed in time for the opening of Forge Island next year. Additionally, the council has received approval for a pocket park on High Street, which has faced delays and rising costs. The council has taken the project in-house to complete it, and the new planning application has been approved. The temporary park project is seen as an opportunity to diversify the town center and enhance the leisure economy. Longer-term plans for the site are also being considered.
