Lummus Revolutionizes Acrylic Acid and Acrylates Industry with Game-Changing Acquisition

Lummus Technology’s acquisition of ester grade acrylic acid technology and light and heavy acrylates process technology expands its portfolio for propylene production and derivative products, providing customers with more options between upstream and downstream operations.

In a recent announcement, Lummus Technology revealed its agreement with Air Liquide Engineering & Construction to acquire the rights to license and market ester grade acrylic acid technology, as well as light and heavy acrylates process technology. This acquisition will enhance Lummus’ propylene offering and provide customers with a more integrated platform of solutions for acrylic acid and acrylates production.

By combining the acrylic acid and acrylates technologies into its portfolio, Lummus is now able to offer end-to-end solutions to its customers. This means that Lummus can provide solutions for the entire chemical value chain, from propane, gas, or biomass to high-value polymers and chemicals used in consumer and industrial products. This integration allows Lummus to drive better capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) solutions and pivot towards circular polymer products, supporting its customers’ investment and sustainability goals.

Acrylic acid is a crucial compound used in the production of super absorbent polymers, adhesives, and coatings. Ester grade acrylic acid, in particular, is vital in the synthesis of various acrylate esters, which are essential components in resins, plastics, rubber, and many other everyday goods. The acquired technology enables the conversion of propylene into ester grade acrylic acid, reducing capital requirements and delivering the industry’s lowest carbon footprint. This technology has been successfully demonstrated for large-scale acrylic acid production worldwide for over 50 years.
