Fort Buchanan and 1st MSC Unite for a Drug-Free Puerto Rico, Promoting a Vibrant Lifestyle

The Fort Buchanan and the 1st Mission Support Command Army Substance Abuse Programs are teaming up to conduct a Red Ribbon campaign, highlighting the consequences of drug abuse and promoting a drug-free lifestyle.

This campaign aims to raise awareness about the environmental impacts of drug abuse and the importance of a drug-free lifestyle in Puerto Rico.

In an effort to encourage a drug-free lifestyle and raise awareness about the consequences of drug abuse, the Fort Buchanan and the 1st Mission Support Command Army Substance Abuse Programs are joining forces to conduct a Red Ribbon campaign in Puerto Rico. The campaign, which will take place from October 23-27, will be held at different locations within the installation.

The primary goal of the campaign is to raise mindfulness on the consequences of using illegal drugs and abusing prescription medication. Yesenia Pagan, Drug Testing Coordinator from the 1st Mission Support Command, stated, “As part of the campaign, we are here facilitating informative materials on this topic that people can share with their family members to increase awareness on substance abuse.” Carlos Montanez, the installation’s Army Substance Abuse Program Coordinator, also emphasized the importance of the campaign in promoting a drug-free lifestyle.

The Red Ribbon Week, which originated in 1985, serves as a symbol for drug prevention. It was established in response to the murder of Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent and veteran Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. Wearing red ribbons during October continues to represent the pledge to live drug-free and honors the sacrifice of all those who have lost their lives in the fight against drugs.

At Fort Buchanan, the commitment to a drug-free lifestyle is demonstrated daily through the U.S. Army Substance Abuse Program and the Employee Assistance Program. These programs aim to strengthen the overall fitness and effectiveness of the Army’s workforce. Fort Buchanan also reinforces its zero-tolerance policy on drug use, aligning with the U.S. Army’s steadfast commitment to maintaining a solid and disciplined force.

The Red Ribbon campaign serves as a reminder of the importance of a drug-free lifestyle not only for individuals but also for the environment. Drug abuse can have severe consequences on ecosystems, water sources, and wildlife. By promoting a drug-free lifestyle, Fort Buchanan and the 1st Mission Support Command Army Substance Abuse Programs are taking a step towards preserving Puerto Rico’s natural resources and protecting the environment.

In conclusion, the Red Ribbon campaign conducted by Fort Buchanan and the 1st Mission Support Command Army Substance Abuse Programs aims to raise awareness about the consequences of drug abuse and promote a drug-free lifestyle. By highlighting the environmental impacts of drug abuse, this campaign serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting Puerto Rico’s natural resources. Through their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle, Fort Buchanan and the 1st Mission Support Command are not only strengthening the Army’s workforce but also contributing to a healthier and more sustainable environment.
