Ericsson’s ‘India 6G’ initiative, with the establishment of a 6G research team at its Chennai R&D center, highlights the company’s commitment to advancing telecommunications technology in India and ensuring the country remains at the forefront of future communication technology.

In a bid to become a leader in 6G technology following the successful rollout of 5G, the Indian government has been focusing on developing and promoting advanced telecommunications solutions. Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications giant, has responded to this by launching its ‘India 6G’ program, which aims to develop foundational solutions for the future of telecommunications.

The ‘India 6G’ initiative features senior research leaders and experienced researchers specializing in radio, networks, AI, and cloud technologies. These experts will collaborate with Ericsson’s research teams in Sweden and the United States to advance 6G technology. The goal of 6G is to create a cyber-physical continuum, where networks provide critical services, immersive communications, and an omnipresent Internet of Things (IoT) while ensuring the integrity of transmitted data.

Magnus Frodigh, Head of Research at Ericsson, emphasized the importance of localizing the 6G research team to address India’s specific needs and incorporate them into the global evolution of telecommunications technology. Ericsson already has three R&D centers in India, located in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Gurugram, showcasing its commitment to the country’s technological growth.

In addition to its internal research efforts, Ericsson is collaborating with leading educational institutions in India for research in radio, AI, and cloud technology. This includes a five-year partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras’ Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI), highlighting the pivotal role of artificial intelligence research in the development of 6G networks.

By establishing the 6G research team in India, Ericsson aims to play a significant role in ensuring that India remains at the forefront of future communication technology. Nitin Bansal, Head of Ericsson India, stated that the company’s vision for 6G aligns with the government’s Bharat 6G vision statement, which focuses on ubiquitous connectivity, sustainable networks, and affordable communication.

The ‘India 6G’ program represents a crucial step in promoting innovation, research, and development in the field of telecommunications in India.
