AI Revolution: How International Trade is Set to be Transformed

As AI services continue to grow and consume more energy, countries with expensive or restricted energy sources may turn to importing AI services from energy-rich nations. This could lead to energy-rich regions becoming major exporters of AI-generated data, drawing AI inputs from countries like the US but specializing in cheap calculation and information transmission. However, the US may face a disadvantage in the AI revolution due to its lack of affordable infrastructure, potentially distributing many of the gains abroad. To mitigate this risk, easing the permitting and construction of power generation could help the US become an economic powerhouse and encourage domestic institutions to prefer buying AI calculations domestically for data-security reasons.

Another major factor in shaping international trade is domestic regulations on AI-derived goods and services. For instance, if AI services suggest numerous pharmaceutical options, but the US has stringent approval restrictions, a trade opportunity may arise with some countries specializing in testing AI-derived pharmaceuticals. Similarly, if advanced AI suggests superior educational techniques, bureaucratic nations may lag behind in implementing these changes, while smaller nations with fewer checks and balances could move quickly to adopt them. This could result in countries that develop or tolerate AI-generated innovations attracting more foreign investment and potentially developing products for export, such as effective online education.
