Unsung Heroes: Small Business Week Sheds Light on Local Entrepreneurs and Their Game-Changing Ideas

Small businesses play a crucial role in the community and economy of Orillia and Lake Country, generating new ideas, creating jobs, and fostering resilience. The annual Small Business Week Campaign, Small Business, Big Ideas, highlights the impact and potential of small business innovation and the importance of supporting these businesses for long-term growth.

In a recent news release, the Orillia and District Chamber of Commerce and Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) announced their partnership with Desjardins to unveil the Small Business Week Campaign, Small Business, Big Ideas. This campaign aims to celebrate the hard-working entrepreneurs and their innovative ideas that drive innovation and bring communities together.

Small businesses in Orillia and Lake Country have faced numerous challenges due to the ongoing pandemic, including labor shortages, declining employee mental health, rising inflation, and debt repayment. Despite these difficulties, small business owners have shown remarkable adaptability and resilience. Many have pivoted to new business models, embraced digital technologies, and found innovative ways to serve their communities.

To sustain this momentum and foster further innovation, the Ontario Government is called upon to take action and prioritize the following:

1. Develop and scale digitization funding and training programs for small businesses, making them easily accessible.
2. Improve access to private capital and credit for small businesses through tax policies, capital market reforms, and loan guarantees.
3. Offer targeted support to help small businesses invest in workplace mental health.
4. Continue to procure from non-profits, non-profit social enterprises, and cooperatives to meet the provincial government’s target of awarding $3 billion in contracts to small businesses by 2026.

Rocco Rossi, president and CEO of OCC, emphasizes that the heart of every successful enterprise lies in big ideas, hard-working entrepreneurs, and a supportive business ecosystem. With over 97.7% of businesses in Ontario being small businesses, there are ample opportunities to invest in these businesses and enable them to stay competitive.

Canadian Small Business Week takes place annually during the third week of October, providing a platform to recognize and celebrate the contributions of small businesses. To learn more about the OCC’s support for small businesses, visit their website.

In conclusion, small businesses are the backbone of Ontario’s economy, driving innovation and economic growth. The Small Business Week Campaign, Small Business, Big Ideas, highlights the impact and potential of small business innovation and emphasizes the need for ongoing support to ensure their long-term success and growth.
