Jim Jordan’s bid for Speaker of the US House of Representatives has hit a roadblock as 20 of his fellow Republicans opted to support someone else. This has thrown his leadership bid into disarray and made his strategy of exposing the opposition more difficult. However, Jordan could continue to press for more Speaker votes with the support of President Trump and the right-wing media. He will have to find ways to convince his opponents without alienating his current supporters. If Jordan cannot demonstrate progress towards winning the Speaker vote, Republicans may have to consider other options, such as giving Kevin McCarthy another chance or expanding the powers of acting Speaker Patrick McHenry. Some centrist Republicans have also suggested forming a coalition with Democrats to elect a compromise Speaker.
