In a shocking incident from California, Laura Barajas, a 40-year-old mother, faced a life-changing ordeal after eating contaminated tilapia. This meal led to the amputation of all her limbs.
Laura bought the fish from a local San Jose market. Soon after eating it, she fell seriously ill. “She was on life support, and her condition was dire,” shared her close friend, Anna Messina.
Doctors identified the cause as Vibrio Vulnificus, a deadly bacteria found in raw seafood. This bacteria is especially dangerous for those with weak immune systems. Every year, around 150 to 200 people get infected, and about 20% don’t survive.
Laura’s story has raised concerns about food safety. To help with her medical bills and new challenges, friends started a GoFundMe campaign. It has already raised over $39,000.
This incident is a reminder of the importance of being cautious with what we eat.
