Norfolk Southern’s deployment of the Digital Train Inspection Portal in Leetonia demonstrates the company’s commitment to investing in advanced technology to enhance safety in the rail industry. This state-of-the-art portal, developed in collaboration with the Georgia Tech Research Institution, utilizes machine-visioning technology and artificial intelligence to identify potential defects on moving trains. With 38 high-resolution cameras capturing over 1,000 images of each rail car as the train passes through the portal, AI analyzes the images in real-time to detect defects. This technology aims to complement crew inspections and provide an additional layer of safety and confidence in Norfolk Southern’s operations. The company plans to install 17 portals along its extensive track network by early 2025.
