Revitalizing History: Richardson Place Emerges as a Thriving Business Hub

Historic downtown New Ulm is experiencing a revitalization with the renovation and repurposing of several historic buildings. One such building is located at 108 N. Minnesota Street, now known as Richardson Place. This building has a rich history, starting as the Erd building and serving as a refuge for women and children during the Battle of New Ulm in 1862. The building also housed a restaurant, bakery, and candy factory under the ownership of Willibald Eibner in 1883. A fire in 1936 led to the rebuilding of the front exterior in a modern style.

In late 2022, the building became Richardson Place, offering professional office space for rent. The building is owned by Ben Pieser, the former owner of New Ulm Furniture. After retiring from the furniture business, Pieser and his daughter Betsy were seeking office space outside of their home. The Erd building became available after accounting firm CliftonLarsonAllen (CLA) relocated. Recognizing that they didn’t need the entire building, Pieser decided to rent out smaller offices to others in the community.

Richardson Place currently houses ten businesses and organizations, including Insurance Leaders Agency, Brown County Yellow Ribbon, United Way of Brown County, Acquired Mental Health, New Om Shop, Principle Skills Relationship Center, Momentum Technology, Hidden Step Marketing, and Genevive Group. The latter two businesses, owned by Mike and Sarah Kunard, share one of the larger office suites. Sarah, who previously operated Genevive from a home office, appreciates having a professional setting to showcase her products. Mike also values the privacy and meeting space that Richardson Place offers.

In addition to individual office spaces, Richardson Place features shared community spaces such as conference rooms and kitchenettes. The building also pays homage to its past with sketches of its different eras displayed on the walls. Some office spaces are available for short-term rental.

Overall, Richardson Place provides a gathering place for various businesses and organizations in downtown New Ulm. Its renovation and repurposing contribute to the ongoing rejuvenation of the historic district.
