Oscar Piastri’s Money Recoupment Shakes McLaren’s Decision to Pay Daniel Ricciardo Not to Race

In our upcoming EcoReporter segment, we will be discussing the impact of Oscar Piastri’s performance on McLaren’s financial situation. According to Karun Chandhok, Piastri’s success on the track is helping McLaren recoup a significant portion of the money they paid Daniel Ricciardo not to race. Last season, Ricciardo struggled to find form and scored only a third of Lando Norris’ points. As a result, McLaren decided to replace him with rookie driver Piastri for the 2023 season. Although McLaren had a slow start to the season, recent upgrades have seen them emerge as Red Bull’s closest rival. Piastri’s impressive performance, including five podium finishes and a Sprint race victory, has helped McLaren close the gap to Aston Martin in the Constructors’ Championship. Chandhok attributes McLaren’s success to having a more balanced lineup, with Piastri contributing roughly two-thirds of Norris’ points compared to Ricciardo’s one-third. This balanced lineup is also beneficial for McLaren’s development, as both drivers want similar things from the car. Chandhok estimates that McLaren will recoup around $10 million or more of what they paid Ricciardo not to race. However, Ted Kravitz defends Ricciardo, stating that it is impossible to know if he could have matched Piastri’s performance in the improved car. Overall, Chandhok believes that Piastri and Norris form one of the most balanced lineups on the grid, pushing each other on the track and contributing to McLaren’s success.
