The strategic partnership between NaaS Technology Inc. and the Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises (OASES) of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) marks a significant milestone in the development of new-energy technology and EV charging solutions in Hong Kong. This partnership will not only support NaaS’ business development but also contribute to the construction of charging service infrastructure in the city.
In recent years, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has been steadily increasing in Hong Kong, with a total of 63,225 EVs accounting for 6.8% of the total vehicle count as of the end of July 2023. With an expected yearly vehicle sale of 50,000 in the next five years and a projected EV penetration rate of 90% in the fifth year, the Hong Kong government recognizes the need to enhance the charging service infrastructure.
To address the challenge of a high car-to-pile ratio, the Hong Kong government rolled out the EV-charging at Home Subsidy Scheme (EHSS) in 2020, allocating HKD 2 billion to the project. An additional HKD 1.5 billion was added to the scheme in 2022. Sinopower HK, the city’s largest charging station operator, became a contractor of the scheme in July, while NaaS HK, an affiliate of NaaS Technology Inc., introduced a “one-click charging” service for EV users in August. These initiatives aim to provide convenient and accessible charging solutions for local residents.
The strategic partnership between NaaS Technology Inc. and OASES further strengthens the development of new-energy technology and EV charging solutions in Hong Kong. NaaS, as the first U.S. listed EV charging service company in China, provides one-stop EV charging solutions for various stakeholders in the industry. With over 652,000 chargers in over 62,000 charging stations connected to NaaS’ network as of June 2023, the company has already established a strong presence in the market.
By settling in Hong Kong Science Park and leveraging the city’s R&D competence and academic resources, NaaS will set up a research center to provide algorithmic support for its global energy assets operation. This move will not only contribute to the company’s globalization layout but also enhance the R&D capabilities in energy AI solutions.
Overall, the strategic partnership between NaaS Technology Inc. and OASES is a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation and advancing the development of new-energy technology in Hong Kong. With the increasing demand for EVs, the collaboration between the government and strategic enterprises like NaaS will play a crucial role in building a robust charging service infrastructure and supporting the transition to a greener future.
