Deutsche Bahn’s investment in AI and robotics for the maintenance of its ICE fleet is set to revolutionize the inspection and servicing process, improving efficiency and effectiveness while freeing up the workforce for more complex tasks.

Deutsche Bahn (DB), the German railway company, is making a significant investment of €55 million in new artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technologies to support the maintenance of its ICE fleet. This investment is expected to revolutionize the way that ICE trains are inspected and serviced, bringing numerous benefits to the company and its passengers.

One of the key technologies that DB is investing in is E-Check, a new system that uses cameras and mobile underfloor devices to thoroughly inspect ICE vehicles. The AI technology then analyzes the recordings to identify any deviations from the target condition. E-Check is capable of detecting small inconsistencies such as a loose screw, as well as more significant issues requiring repair. It can even identify blemishes on the outside of the train, such as damaged pictograms.

The use of E-Check significantly increases efficiency, with testing showing that a 374-meter XXL ICE with 13 cars can be inspected by the camera system in just 5 minutes. This is a vast improvement compared to the time it takes for humans to complete a manual inspection. Dr. Michael Peterson, DB board member for long-distance passenger transport, believes that this technology will revolutionize the maintenance of ICE trains and allow them to be back in service for passengers more quickly. It will also help DB address the challenges of a growing fleet and an increasing shortage of skilled workers.

In addition to E-Check, DB is also investing in ‘cobots’ to assist with the maintenance process. These fully automated robots can recognize the position of connections on different types of trains. The cobots will move along the ICE, attaching the appropriate connections to pump wastewater out of the vehicles and supply them with fresh water. Once the disposal or supply is complete, the cobot removes the nozzles and moves on to the next carriage.

The use of AI and robotics in the maintenance of ICE trains is expected to bring numerous benefits. It will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the process, allowing for quicker inspections and repairs.
