Battersea Dogs and Cats Home Honors Paul O’Grady with Namesake Veterinary Hospital, Paving the Way for Animal Welfare

The naming of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home’s veterinary hospital after Paul O’Grady is a fitting tribute to the TV and radio presenter’s dedication to animal welfare.

In a heartwarming gesture, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has announced that its veterinary hospital will be named after the late Paul O’Grady. O’Grady, who passed away in March at the age of 67, was renowned for his work with the animal charity, having become an ambassador in 2012. His commitment to the cause was further highlighted through the popular ITV series, For The Love Of Dogs, which filmed 11 series at the Battersea facility.

Since O’Grady’s passing, a tribute fund has been set up in his honor, raising an impressive £480,000 to date. To commemorate what would have been his 11th year as an ambassador, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has pledged to utilize these funds for “life-saving and transformative medical procedures” for animals in need of specialized care and treatment. Additionally, five other animal charities that held significance for O’Grady will each receive £20,000, including StreetVet, which provides veterinary care for pets belonging to individuals experiencing homelessness, and the RSPCA Ashford Garden Cattery, where O’Grady served as president.

O’Grady’s husband, Andre Portasio, expressed his gratitude for the support shown to the charities that were dear to O’Grady’s heart. He stated, “Paul was so passionate in his support of rescue animals, and it gives me some comfort to know that through the hard work and commitment of Battersea and other charities, Paul’s legacy will live on.”

The impact of O’Grady’s dedication to animal welfare has been widely recognized, earning him an RSPCA animal hero award and a special recognition award at the 2018 National Television Awards. His television series, For The Love Of Dogs, was also posthumously honored with the factual entertainment award at the 2023 NTAs. O’Grady’s unwavering commitment to championing the underdog will continue to be carried forward by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, ensuring that the funding will be used to provide vital support to animals in need of costly surgeries, medications, and rehabilitation.

In conclusion, the decision to name Battersea Dogs and Cats Home’s veterinary hospital after Paul O’Grady is a fitting tribute to his tireless efforts in the field of animal welfare. It serves as a reminder of his passion for rescue animals and ensures that his legacy lives on through the continued support provided to disadvantaged animals.
